Our way of celebrating the nation's Declaration of Independence is to invite the community to the Museum to admire Rhode Island Red baby chicks who have themselves just declared their own independence — from the egg. Click here for a slide show.

The Museum was selected as "The Best Living History Experience" in New England, in Yankee Magazine's May/June special issue, Travel Guide to New England. The editors said of the Museum: "Vivid exhibits capture the life of farmers, fishermen, and home cooks of 150 years ago. The carpentry shop, blacksmith shop, textile arts center, working print shop, and a small working farm (with a heritage flock of Rhode Island Reds) enhance any visit."
If you've visited us within the past couple of years, you've no doubt noticed the red brick path leading to the Visitor Center. Shepherded with extraordinary devotion by the late Frank Maroni, the brick path is an ongoing project at the Museum, and you can participate. You can buy a brick for $125 and have up to three lines of text inscribed on it. (Each line can accommodate 20 characters and spaces.) Your brick donation is tax deductible and benefits SCM's exhibit development and educational programs. Click here for a printer-friendly form and send it, with a check made out to SCM Brick Path Project, to us at PO Box 709, Narragansett, RI 02882.
The Museum's Print Shop is the proud owner of its first Heidelberg press, delivered on June 21.
The Victorian Rose Parlor quilt will be raffled off at our October Fest fundraiser at Canonchet Club, Narragansett Town Beach, on October 15. The quilt was machine quilted by April Gilroy and pieced by Evie Cherms.

How you can help ...

Adopt a Garden!
Eleven flower gardens of various sizes and stages of development at South County Museum await your green thumb. You pick the space, come and go as you please. It's yours for the year. SCM will provide plants, hand tools if necessary and lots of gratitude.
Call the museum at 783-5400 or email us for details!!
William Sprague, the "Boy Governor" and Civil War hero, was an important and endlessly fascinating figure in Rhode Island history and we're trying to find out more about him. If you have documents, artifacts or information about him or his family, his wives' families and about the Canonchet property or mansion, please give our director, Jim Crothers, a call at 783-5400.
Wanted: Printer's Devil
to help create a proof index of the Print Shop's inventory of typefaces and engravings. Training will be provided. Ideal for junior and senior high school students. Community service credit given.
We always are looking for volunteers to help ... build exhibits ... greet visitors ... conduct tours ... with the flower beds and herb garden.

Planning a wedding this year?

We have several ideal — and very affordable — settings for weddings and other events. For more about our wedding venues, please click here.

The Museum is on a lovely, seven-acre campus in the Narragansett Pier area, with picnic tables, spacious lawns, lots of shade trees, and plenty of free parking. We also offer the Metz Exhibit Building, with ample room for up to 100 people plus a small kitchen and two restrooms. Or how about the Stables, with their ivy-festooned walls, for a novel open-air setting?

In addition to the Metz Building, with its many fascinating exhibits, and the picturesque Stables, we also offer tours of a working Print Shop and of our small working farm with its Heritage Flock of Rhode Island Reds, plus the carpentry shop, the blacksmith's shop, a one-room schoolhouse and the carriage barn.

Depending upon the ages and interests of group members, tours can typically last from 30 minutes to two hours.

We're available for Weddings and bridal showers · Anniversary parties, birthday parties and private parties of all kinds · Corporate Meetings · Scout Camp Overnights · Educational Programs for Young People · Senior Tours. We also offer Museum to Go: Visits to Classrooms and Nursing Homes
