Canonchet Park Nature Trail
| The Nature Trail, like the museum itself, is located in 174-acre Canonchet Farm, owned by the town of Narragansett. The trail was cleared a few years ago by Eagle Scouts. The trail begins near the museum's Anne Hoxsie Lane entrance (lower right), wandering through meadows (light-colored patch at center), passing by the least-narrow part of the Narrow River (upper left, known as Pettaquamscutt Cove) and ending at the museum's Living History Farm (lower left). The trail contains several interesting landmarks left by Ice Age glaciers and a wide variety of plant life. You may also encounter a wild turkey or two and perhaps an assortment of other wildlife. Friends of Canonchet Farm offers free Sunday afternoon walks, led by experts, through the trail. Adjacent to the trail is the Pettaquamscutt Cove National Wildlife Refuge, which provides habitat for shore birds, terns and fish. |
