This poem is from a hymn by Samuel Francis Smith (1808-1895), a hymnist, journalist and Baptist minister, but also appeared in earlier psalmbooks and other books of praise. Smith is most noted for writing the hymn America, ("My Country, 'Tis of thee"), but apparently was unaware the tune was that of God Save the Queen. |
