A Little "Practical Magic" at SCM

Practical Magic is the title of a movie that just opened in theaters - but it's also a pretty good phrase for what we have to offer here at SCM. The relaxing rhythms of paper folding, the transformation of fabric in a dye pot, the thrill of a spooky story on an autumn night: craft and community have a magic all their own. Come join us!

There’s still time to register for our paper folding class on this Saturday, the 26th. Learn how to make tea bag squares and kaleidoscope origami medallions - a few simple materials and you’ll be able to decorate anything from cards to magnets to scrapbooks. With the holidays around the corner, this is the perfect craft to add a handmade touch to presents, cards, and wrapping. Click here to sign up!

On Wednesday September 30th at 6:00, our Reading New England class will dig into its first Hawthorne short story: “The Minister’s Black Veil.” Why did the Rev. Mr. Hooper start shrouding his face with that mysterious black veil? And what might his choice reveal about how Hawthorne understood New England’s Puritan past? On Saturday October 3rd, we’ll be brewing up a little everyday magic at a drop-in natural dyeing demo. Stop by from 10:30 - 1:00 to check out our indigo vat, set up in front of our Saturday Thrift Shop. Bring one small item to dye (think T-shirt size) and learn about the art and science of dyeing from our artisans. $10 for general public, free to members.

And save the dates for three big Saturday events in October! Our Harvest Fair returns on the 17th from 11-4 and our Halloween Party on the 31st from 1-3. In between, we’ll host the “Art of the Letter” on the 24th, with demos and activities celebrating the beauty of paper correspondence in the age of the smartphone. More info coming soon!
