Dear Friends and Members,

As a person who did not get married in Watch Hill once said, “August slip[s] away into a moment in time.” Don’t let this August slip away - that would be like choosing Madison Square Garden over Ocean House (how gauche)! We’ve got plenty happening at SCM to help you keep “living for the hope of it all” in these last golden weeks of summer …

On Wednesday August 19th, local bands Bee and the Boys and Rhode to Bali will play for our Music at the Museum concert! Pack a picnic, blankets, and lawn chairs to enjoy some great tunes on our beautiful grounds. We’ll have an Open House in our exhibit hall and craft barns beginning at 5:00, with music starting at 6:30.  Admission and proceeds from the cash bar all benefit the museum. $15 admission, kids 12 and under free.

Listen closely: carried on these late-August breezes, can you hear the scratching of pencils … the squeak of chalk … and the rumbling of a cage full of bingo balls? Back to School Bingo is August 26th at 5:30 in our Metz Exhibition Hall! Bring the family and play to win shiny new school supplies - or SCM-themed prizes, for the grown-up bingo enthusiasts. $10 for adults, $5 for kids 6-12, free to members (and kids included in family memberships).

But don’t let kids have all the fun learning new things! Did you know the first union in the United States was formed by shoemakers in 1789? Or that Frederick Douglass delivered his famous “Fourth of July” address to an abolitionist sewing circle? One of these fun facts comes from Glen Adamson’s Craft: An American History. The other comes from SCM curators’ research. Join us on September 2nd at 6:00 for a conversation about both! After a discussion of Craft guided by SCM’s director, our curators will unveil two new permanent displays on shoemaking and

needlework. Adamson’s book will provide a rich background for exploring SCM’s mission to preserve the history of craft in South County. Don’t miss this chance to be part of the conversation! $10 admission, free to members.

And of course, mark your calendars for our 40th Annual Quilt Show from September 11-13. More news about this exciting event coming soon - stay tuned!

Join the Museum! As a member, you’ll enjoy benefits like free admission and discounted class prices. Join our community of history lovers and artisans today and help keep time-honored traditions alive!
