Dear Friends and Members,
It’s the moment you’ve been waiting for: our 40th Annual Quilt Show is just two weeks away! From Friday September 11 - Sunday September 13, come see the Metz Exhibition Hall transformed into a patchwork kaleidoscope with more than eighty (yes, eighty!) incredible quilts on display. Each day at 11:00, museum director Rebecca Kelly will give a talk on her favorite historic quilts from SCM’s collections, and there will be all-day demonstrations of techniques like yo-yos and English paper
piecing. (Please note that admission to this major fundraiser is not included with membership. We thank you for your support!)
If you’re not able to make it to Narragansett for the show itself, you still have a chance to bring a piece home. Deborah Jennings has generously donated this year’s amazing raffle quilt, titled “So Many HSTs” (that’s “half-square triangles,” for the less quilt-savvy!). But remember, you don’t need to wait until after Labor Day to celebrate historic craft with us. We’ll be informally kicking off our fall season on Wednesday, September 2nd, at 6:00, with a joint book discussion and exhibit opening. Come chat with us about Glenn Adamson’s Craft: An American History—or, if you haven’t had the chance to finish the book, soak up the discussion and then enjoy a Q&A with curators as they unveil two new permanent displays.
And if those lengthening shadows, that slight crispness in the air, have you wistful about your back-to-school days, there’s plenty coming up at SCM to satisfy curious minds! Mark your calendars for a lecture on Gorham Narragansett silver on September 16th, a paper-folding class on September 26th, and a three-week course on Nathaniel Hawthorne’s short fiction on September 30, October 7, and October 14.
