September 11, 2026 - Quilts, Classes, and More!
Dear Friends and Members,
Our quilt show is under way, and looking spectacular! This Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, join us from 10-4 to see the Metz Exhibition Hall draped in quilts of all sizes, colors, and even shapes. Browse a pop-up resale shop for fabrics and books, enjoy demos of quilting techniques, and at 11:00 each day, take in a talk on historic quilts by the Museum’s director. Buy tickets for this year’s amazing raffle quilt at the front desk, or online. The drawing will be held at the end of the day on Sunday, but you do not need to be present to win! (Please note that admission to this major fundraiser is not included with membership. We thank you for your support!)
Once the talented quilters have taken their textile art back home with them, there are still plenty of opportunities to learn and make at SCM this month ...
On Wednesday September 16th, collector John Aucott will lecture on “Narragansett Bay in Silver: The Gorham Narragansett Pattern and a Collector’s Journey.” Join us at 6:00 to learn about Gorham’s extraordinary 1880s Narragansett pattern and the shoreline, shells, and marine life that inspired it. You’ll have the chance to see and even handle select pieces up-close. Admission is $10 for the general public and free to members.
On Saturday September 26th, get a head start on your holiday card making in a paper folding class! From 10:30 - 1:00, guest instructor Leslie Mahler will show you how to fold tea bag squares and make kaleidoscope origami patterns. Once you know the technique, you can decorate greeting cards, bookmarks, gift bags, scrapbooks, and more. Bring your favorite scissors and glue and spend a Saturday learning this versatile craft! And if you’re in a true back-to-school mood, why not tackle one of those classic authors you’ve always been meaning to read? Beginning on September 30th, curator (and former English teacher!) Erin will lead a three-week class on the short fiction of Nathaniel Hawthorne. Eerie apparitions; Puritan hypocrisies; sin, guilt, and the devil lurking in the dark woods –Hawthorne’s spooky tales are perfect fare as the nights get longer and the air turns crisp. Explore a seminal New England author with the benefit of an instructor who will guide discussion, offer historical context, and help to untangle Hawthorne’s dense
