The Canonchet Gazette

A South County Museum Publication July 2024 Issue

Greetings!

It’s almost time for our annual 4th of July Celebration and Chick Hatch! The museum will be open from 11pm-2pm on the holiday. Visit us and see the newest members of our Rhode Island Red chicken flock, and learn about the heritage breed. There will also be music, games, and a reading of the Declaration of Independence.

Summer is officially here! That means we’ve transitioned to our Summer hours. The museum is now open Wednesdays 3pm-7pm (last entry at 6pm), and Thursdays-Saturdays 10am-4pm (last entry at 3pm).

Wednesdays at the museum are Family Nights. Admission is free to members or $10 per family after 5pm, and each Wednesday evening has a special event. While events have family friendly themes all are welcome to come join the fun.

If you can’t wait for the 4th to see the new chicks, come visit us on Wednesday, July 3rd, to get a sneak peak and participate in some chick-themed craft activities.

Other Family Night events this month include a Doll Quilt camp on the 10th & 24th, an interactive presentation from 18th century reenactors on the 17th, and bingo on the 31st!

This month we also have a Dovetail Shaker Carrier workshop taught by guest instructor Eric Swanson. The workshop is July 20th-21st, and all materials will be provided. The cost is $300 per student. Click here to register

We are currently enrolling for adult (ages 16+) blacksmithing lessons. Classes are available Saturdays from 10am-1:00pm or Wednesdays from 5pm-8pm. The cost is $125 per student - Email rebecca@southcountymuseum.org to arrange a class. The forge can accommodate groups of 3.

On July 27th and 28th, join the Battery “B” First Rhode Island Light Artillery at South County Museum for the School of the Soldier Experience. Suggested for ages 7-12, each 2-hour session will consist of a number of fun-filled, educational activities, demonstrations, and end with the firing of a real civil war cannon. Two 19th century quilts from the museum’s collection are off for a weekend getaway at the Newport Show on July 27 & 28 from 10am-5pm. They will be featured in Stitches in Time: Needlework and Quilts from the Collections of the Newport Historical Society and the South County Museum.

We are accepting applications for our 38th Annual Quilt Show until July 31st. For application guidelines & submission forms go to our events page. The show will take place September 6th-8th.

We hope to see you soon!
